Carolyn Reid Cameron KC, NP
Public DefenderKing’s Counsel, Mrs. Carolyn Reid Cameron, who was sworn in by Governor-General, the Most Honourable Sir Patrick Allen on September 1, 2022, as the nation’s Public Defender, is the second woman to hold the post, after Mrs. Arlene Harrison Henry, Attorney-at-Law, who demitted office in April 2022.
Her colleagues describe Mrs. Reid Cameron as a highly respected Attorney-at-Law, who is a fearless defender of the rights of her clients, an excellent Attorney, and an advocate rated among the best of the best.
She was admitted to the Jamaican Bar on November 18, 1988. She has also practiced in other jurisdictions.
Testimony to Mrs. Reid Cameron’s advocacy skills was made manifest in her being elevated to the rank and status of Queen’s Counsel (now King’s Counsel) in July 2018.
Prior to this, Mrs. Reid Cameron served in the Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions and rose to the rank of Deputy Director of Public Prosecutions.
She later left that office to venture into private practice in 1996 at the feet of the late Mr. Ian Ramsay, Q.C. Mrs. Reid Cameron later headed her own law firm, Carolyn C. Reid & Co. She is also a Notary Public.
Mrs. Reid Cameron has also served on several boards of management including that of the Camperdown High School, and she has chaired for a number of years, the First Instance Tribunal of the Jamaica Racing Commission, all this whilst contributing to the General Legal Council by serving on committees there. She was also an Associate Tutor at the Norman Manley Law School for a number of years.
There is another side to Mrs. Reid Cameron who has contributed on a national scale to the creative and performing arts.
Mrs. Reid Cameron has graced stages such as the Ward Theatre, and the Little Theatre, with her acting skills. She has featured in the opera 1865, which is the only known locally written and performed opera.
She is a renown Spinto Soprano soloist gracing local and international stages such as London, Berlin, Mexico, extensively in the USA, Canada and the Caribbean and has been singing with the acclaimed University Singers for the past thirty-six (36) years.
Mrs. Reid Cameron also sings and continues to perform with the National Dance Theatre Company of Jamaica.
